Flying Dream Meaning and Interpretations

48

“I’m Flying!” Dreaming of Flying can be empowering.  Flying dreams are one of a rare breed of dreams that most often have good meanings.  Understanding the meaning of your dreams will depend on the context of the dream. Often, the dreamer is fully aware that he or she is dreaming.  This type of dream is referred to as a “lucid dream.”  In these dreams you are usually fully in charge and able to fly anywhere you choose.

Often during a flying dream you’ll feel as if you’ve always known how to fly; that flying is a completely natural activity that is as much a part of your life as breathing.  You are enjoying the scenery, feeling like you’re flowing smoothly through the air, unbothered by opposing winds or obstacles in your path.  The freedom to fly without fear, without weights that hold you to a mundane life on the ground, can be the most exhilarating feeling you’ve ever experienced.

Understanding the Meaning of Your Dream

Meaning of flying in a dreamA lucid dream of flying without complications leaves you feeling strong, empowered, and on top of the world when you wake.  When you wake you may be able to connect this dream with a situation in which you’re currently involved.  The dream suggests that you’re feeling good about the situation and are in charge of it.  You feel as if you’re invincible, that nothing can stop you from achieving your goals.  These dreams suggest that you are currently at the top of your game and your future is looking bright.

Falling dreams are also very common among dreamers.

There are, however, flying dreams that include complications, and understanding those complications can help you to understand and resolve problems in your waking life.

Common Difficulties that Occur in Flying Dreams:

Being Held Back

Having trouble taking off means someone is holding you back, keeping you from moving forward to the next step in your life.  If the setting of your dream is your work, then perhaps you don’t feel motivated to take your career to the next level, at least not in the current setting.  Maybe it’s time for a change.  If the setting is home, it may be time for family discussions.  Maybe a family member’s own wishes are holding you back from where you’d really like to be.

Powerlessness

If there are obstacles in your path as you fly and you can’t fly freely, consider that there might be obstacles in your waking life that are keeping you from moving ahead with your dreams.  Your mind may be alerting you to these obstacles in the hope that once identified, they can be resolved.

Fear of Success or Challenges

If you find you are afraid that you’re flying too high, it may be that something in you fears the changes brought on by success.

Dreams

Spiritual Aspects of Flying

Dreams of flying have special meanings to those interested in their own spirituality.  For instance:  If you are flying upwards, it is believed you are growing spiritually and achieving a higher level.

Flying down toward the ground may mean that you are attempting to be more in tune with your unconscious mind.

If, in your dream, you are flying low and parallel to the ground, it is believed to mean that you are travelling effortlessly through your everyday life.

You may even find yourself flying backwards in a dream.  Spiritualists believe that this is a reflection of a desire to look back on your life and relive past joys and sorrows.  Then, with the understanding brought by clear hindsight, you wish to bring healing and resolution to anxieties and fears that have been plaguing you in your waking life.

Sexual Release

Sigmund Freud believed that flying dreams were a means of sexual release. Freud believed that most dreams are centered around sexual oppression that is suppressed by society morals. The dream of flying around is released your sexual tension and being free. Freud’s theories on dreams came about during the Victorian era. A period of time when everyone was sexually oppressed and help back. This is why most of his theories revolve around sex and sexual freedom.

Falling When Flying

A beautiful flying dream can morph into a nightmarish falling dream should we lose confidence in our ability to fly.  If you find yourself in this situation, your awareness of it means it is a lucid dream and you’ll be able to change it.  Throw out your arms and take charge of your flight once again.

If you find that you’re unable to discard the fear, then tell yourself to come awake.  You should be able to instantly come awake the moment you think that.  It may leave your heart racing, but at least you won’t have to experience hitting the ground.

Lucid Dreaming – How to Have a Flying Dream

If you want to have a flying dream, it is possible to initiate one by lucid dreaming.  There are tricks that you must master before you can fly unencumbered.

First, you must change your dream from something that’s happening to you, to something you’re in charge of.  If you think back to some of your more memorable dreams, you may find that there were times in which you were aware that you were dreaming.

Before sleeping, firmly remind yourself that the moment you recognize that you’re dreaming, you will take charge.  This is your dream, it is up to you whether you’re in charge of the events as they unfold.

Once you’ve gained control of the dream, you must let go of the belief that you are grounded by human limitations.  Remind yourself that this is a dream and absolutely anything is possible.  Bring in a friend, if you like.  Sometimes, that friend will even remember the dream the next day.

Imagine yourself in an open area and start hopping.  Higher and higher you’ll hop until you realize you can stretch out your arms and fly.  Once aloft, do not worry about obstacles, you are in charge and if obstacles appear, they are nothing to you.  Fly around them.  Soar higher.  Fly into space if that pleases you.  There are no limits when you are in charge in a lucid dream.

In fact, if you’re hoping to have an out-of-body experience, a lucid flying dream is a great start.  Once flying, imagine yourself visiting the destination of your choice.  You may be able to relate accurate details about the location when you wake.

Nightmares can be changed to flying dreams, as well.  Either decide to fly away, or back off and hover over the situation to get a better perspective.  It may help you solve something that’s been causing you stress in your life.

Practice this night after night and soon your waking life will be working in your favor as you begin to realize just how much power you really have over your life.

  1. So mine is kinda weird.

I have been having flying dreams for about 10+ years. I’ve not been counting, but I reckon I’ve had about 50-100 flying dreams. These dreams happen serially. In the first few months, I always faced obstacles and I couldn’t fly well. I had to run a distance to be able to fly, just like an airplane, and also had people chasing me or trying to pull me down. Some years after, I could lift off at will and the obstacles were reducing.

These last years, I’ve become a master of flying. I can fly backward, sidewards, up into the sky, glide like a bird. I just lift myself up and I’m free in the air. This time, I have fewer obstacles. I could fly publicly without hiding my face, unlike in previous years.

Last night was the first time I carried people. I carried my 3 siblings and I thought we couldn’t fly past a very high wall, but we did.

Whenever I wake up from a flying dream, I feel so happy and liberated.

    • Wow! This sounds exactly like me.
I have been having flying dreams since about 6 years old and I am now 31.

I have these dreams at least not less than 2 times every week. I have become so good at it such that, sometimes even when I am awake, I feel like I really caan fly.

Often i fly just to show people that I can fly and do stunts. It is a good feeling- I wake up feeling happy. But sometimes, i fly too high I have difficulties controlling my landing.
Then there are times when I fly to escape from obstacles, especially people with knives trying to kill me.
I carried my cousin last night for the first time- but I got tired and put him down. Then the people we were escaping from captured him.

I woke up scared, I was shaking. I still am feeling scared- my heart has been racing all day long.
I am worried, what could happen if in the future i get caught by the people who are always trying to kill me. This scares me..

  2. Stealthkiller on

So, last night once again I flew. With someone I don’t really know. I’ve flown before this a several times and before this it was a little hard to lift up but this time nothing held me. He was someone who needed my help to get somewhere before he was out of time. It was like I had this hidden ability of flying and I told him I can make you fly once. Just once and then you’ll never fly again. I have mastered flying completely!! Just like all dragon ball characters. What does this say??

  3. i think mine is more than expected because when i have a dream like that i just start flying actually sometimes i even use my hands to go far much feather and when i get to the sky i star going around watching the ground. actually 1 off the most scary one. i was in a plain then i suddenly jumped out then i started flying.going to the ground then i discovered that i had landed in a country i dint belong to then i flew again but then i was going back to my country. i even court the same plain i had jumped out of. this is some of the things.

  4. I dreamed I bled shortly from my nose after flying in an extremely high speed with somebody I can’t recognize.

I had my eyes open and I was flying in a straight direction between buildings and mountains. The speed was so high that I crossed many countries in just some seconds. At some point I even went through a huge block of water which was like under the ocean, and I was still able to breathe normally without feeling the water choking me. Then we stopped right in the place where we took off and we were surrounded by other comrades which I don’t know in my waking life. And they were like curious to know how was our experience and what we saw. And at that right moment I felt something is dropping from my nose, I touched it, it was blood. I thought it was because of the speed we were flying in. And I also thought “So, that is the feeling of a nosebleed ! ” because in my waking life I have never bled from my nose.

Can you please help me understand this dream ?

  5. I have this recurring dream of flying too. Months before, I’ve been dreaming that I have the ability to be able to float in the air if I concentrate on it. I can leap from houses and power lines with ease, then I can stay afloat above the ground. This kind of dream has been repeating many times until finally last night I dreamed that I flew like Superman. I was able to fly from one country to another, and I tried to fly as high as I can but then realized that the oxygen content in the upper atmosphere is low, so I got back down, fearing I might die. But then I can fly anytime I want to. I wonder what kind of dream I will be having tonight. Anybody who has an interpretation, I would love to hear it. *_*

  6. Hey I’ve been having this issue for over a year. It doesn’t happen all the time but the majority of the time. I get into my lucid dream state and I want to fly. Getting up in the air is easy but once I start flying, I keep going higher and higher and I can’t control how high I go. I then quickly start to panic and I wake up. I hate it so much because I never get to enjoy my state of lucidity for more than a minute. Any suggestions or tips?

I just had a dream last night that I wasn’t flying, more floating. And it was dark, I was like in space, and the only light was coming from the galaxys directly above me. My fiancé was also in the dream. And there were a few cars parked to my left, and a small pool of water in the back corner behind me. It was all in the middle of nothing, surrounded by just empty space. Just blackness and purplish everywhere. I could float below the cars, and then at one point, my fiancé decided to go down a hole filled with some kind of water, and I remember feeling scared. I know thine description was kind of disorganized, but that’s really all I can remember. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

  8. Hello I had a dream I was with loved ones at an outside casino and there where these big guys looking for me and my cousin. I remember I won 1000 dollars on a machine and met a guy which we where feeling each other. Then I remember the big guys chasing us. I started flying my cousin couldn’t and I keeped trying to pick her up to fly with me but it was a fail. I also remember flying around the twin towers! So freaking weird! Then I remember kissing the guy I met and feeling all types of butterflies we were even telling each other I love you. The big guys never got us we were hiding from them. And everyone at the end everyone was mad and didn’t want me flying they said it was illegal to fly. Super crazy dream with a lot going on.

  9. I alway dream that I’m flying away from trouble like people wanting to fight me or attack me, I always fly away to safety, these dream are quite frequently. Any one any idea why I have these dream?

  10. I have a recurring dream of being pulled upwards towards the sky in any dream where I hop or jump more than a few feet off the ground. In the dream, I’m always scrambling to hold onto people, objects, etc to try to ground myself again and I always wake before reaching sky height. These dreams are never enjoyable. Any advice on why I keep having this dream would be very much appreciated.

    • I have the same dreams and feelings like you. I am pulled up,kind of,no gravity, and I try to hold on something. .. maybe because I have fear of hights. In the end I hit in a wall or something and I wake up.

    • I am having the same dream and it’s scary, no one will help me and I’m lost and can’t stay on the ground no matter how much I try. Did you ever find any answers?

  11. I have been able to fly in my dreams from childhood but now I am suspecting that there is something else going on.When I fly in my dreams I direct the force which gives me flight through my hands to counter act gravity. The force that enables me to fly in my dreams is ” something that can be measured when I am awake”by other people.I havent tried to use electronics to measure it but by pushing the force through my hands in the direction of another person. They feel it and tell me that it is a substance that is real. I think that this ability is within all people. I will continue to study it within a small group. When another person can know that it is real then like I said there is something more to this. This is happening while i am wide awake.

    • I have the same type dreams you have and they even plague me when I am awake. I often get as high as above the power lines and I am usually trying to get people to fly with me but they can’t. I flap my arms and gain altitude, glide for a bit and then flap again as I start to lower. I always have safe landings and then run and flap to take off again. I can’t figure out what it means but I have had many of them and they are all pretty much alike. There are always people there with me that are trying to fly with me but can’t. They all seems so very real.
