Have you ever had a dream where you woke up feeling like the dream was trying to tell you something? Whether you dream about a lost love from your childhood, a friend who is no longer on this earth, or a grandparent who has passed away, there are moments in life when we awake from dreams feeling like they do matter.
While everyone dreams are unique to the individual, there are often common themes that happen among dreamers. You may experience dreams of being happy, sad, excited, angry and every possible human emotion. Dreams are a way for your unconscious mind to filter out everything that you process throughout the day.
Whatever thoughts we put inside of our head, those thoughts are often reflected inside of our dreams. This is why they often say if you have a puzzle you can’t solve, sleep on it. When you think about something hard enough, your unconscious mind can often go to work at night trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together when you are asleep.
If you are someone who is constantly day dreaming and thinking about the future, you would probably expect to dream about going to space or going on a big adventure. Someone who is a romantic and dreaming about falling in love, is going to experience dreams about meeting their future soulmate or going on a romantic adventure with their current partner.
While most dreams are mundane and won’t have a big impact on you when you awake, there are some dreams that you may experience that will cause you to be restless when you awake. These dreams have such a big impact on the dreamer that you will often look for answers to try and find out what they dream meant to you. While there are millions of different dreams you can experience, here are 5 common dreams that have a big impact on the dreamer.
1. Dreaming of Someone Who Has Passed Away
One of the most emotional dreams you can experience is dreaming about someone you have lost. When we are young, we don’t have enough life experience to know what it means to lose someone we love. However, as we grow older we will start to experience loss of people who love in our life.
Losing family members, best friends, and even lovers can have such a big impact on us in our waking life, it is not surprising that these dreams will have a big impact on you when you dream about them. Nothing can be more exciting/sad when you see someone you thought was dead show up alive and well in your dream. These dreams are often happy when you are experiencing them, but sad when you awake from the dreams.
2. Dreaming about a Partner Cheating on You
One dream that people often experience when they are in a relationship is cheating dreams. Cheating dreams often touch the biggest fear that people have when they are in a relationship. These dreams are often a realization of your worst nightmares coming true in the dream. If you dream your partner is cheating on you, most of the time it is simply your mind worrying about things that are not true.
This is something that we have talked about in the past, so I won’t go into detail about the meaning of cheating dreams. If you experience a cheating dream, make sure you don’t go out and immediately accuse your partner of cheating. Unless there are real signs in your waking life, this is probably something you shouldn’t worry about.
3. Dreaming about an Ex
If you dream about your ex this is going to be another dream that causes you to wake up in shock. This is especially true if you already thought that you have gotten over your ex, and suddenly he invades your unconscious mind.
Dreams about an ex can impact us for days because when you awake your mind will be flooded with thoughts about your ex and the past you shared together. These dreams can be devastating because they will bring back a lot of the positive and negative memories of your ex. This is why it is important for you to realize that just because your ex shows up in your dream, doesn’t mean you should contact them or have them back in your life.
Most of the time an ex appears in a dream it is simply our unconscious mind filtering out past memories that we had about that person. Good or bad, these dreams will have a major impact on us when we awake.
4. Dreaming about Someone You Love Dying
Dreams about death are very scary dreams because they often make us aware of our own mortality. We cannot live forever and will die eventually. This is something that everyone has to come to grips with and must accept going forward in the future. Dreaming about someone you love dying will often show you how much that person means to you.
Sometimes these dreams occur because our unconscious mind wants us to realize how much that person means to us. Perhaps you haven’t been spending as much time contacting your loved one and calling them as much as you should be doing it. Losing someone you love dearly is a way for you to realize the importance that the person plays in your life.
5. Dreaming about a Traumatic Event from the Past
Throughout our growth and development, there are always specific events that shape our life. Many of these events are good, but sometimes we experience things that can have a strong impact on us negatively. Someone who was picked on when they were younger, may dream about being bullied by the same group of people that bullied them before.
Conversely, if you lost a family member in a car accident, you could dream about that accident happening again. Sometimes our unconscious mind will visit traumatic events from our past in an attempt to try and deal with those.
People often don’t realize that by pushing back negative experiences in the back of your mind and not dealing with them, you may actually cause a lot of harm to yourself. You may have hidden anxieties that are causing you to fail to live up to your true potential. Sometimes revisiting an old event can help bring that experience back into your conscious thought so you can tackle it head on.
Processing Old Memories in Dreams
One of the reasons why we dream about thing that may be negative is because they help us identify specific things that we may be holding on to. If you still have anger or hate towards someone who did something to you many years ago, that hate can end up having very negative consequences on you going forward in your life.
Our dreams are such an important part of the healing process that allows our unconscious mind to help tackle some of these issues that may be hindering us in our life.
So if you ever experience any of these dreams, remember that you are not alone. When you awake from the dream, ask yourself what messages your thoughts are trying to send to you. Are you appreciating the people enough or do you still have feelings for someone who broke your heart many years ago?
Whatever you dream about, remember that these dreams are designed to help you move forward in your life. Even though you may not feel good about the dream, it is an essential function that all human beings experience.
